Bamboo & Ornamental Grasses
Create movement, privacy, and texture—choose from graceful bamboos and statement-making grasses selected for Scenescape gardens and patios.
“Bamboo is a type of grass, and many ornamental grasses share the same design magic: upright blades, rhythmic sway, and seasonal seedheads. In bamboos, growth comes from underground rhizomes—some form tidy clumps, while others can spread more actively without barriers.”
Choose the right look (and the right habit)
From living screens to soft meadow textures—use these quick cues to pick plants that match your space, sunlight, and maintenance comfort.
Screening & structure
For privacy, look for upright bamboos or tall grasses with dense clumps. For a softer effect, choose arching grasses that move with the breeze.
Clumping vs spreading
Some bamboos stay contained as clumps, while others spread via rhizomes. If you’re unsure, pick container-friendly options or plan a root barrier.
Seasonal interest
Many ornamental grasses shine with plumes or seedheads in season. Expect the look to change across the year depending on species and climate.
Care highlights (varies by plant)
Bamboo and ornamental grasses are often resilient, but needs vary by species, pot size, heat, wind exposure, and whether you’re growing in-ground or in containers.
Light
Most do best in bright light to sun. For harsher afternoon sun, some varieties appreciate a little protection—especially in pots.
Water
Keep evenly moist while establishing. After that, watering depends on heat and root volume—containers dry faster than in-ground plantings.
Soil & feeding
A well-draining mix supports healthy roots. Light feeding during active growth can help, but avoid overdoing it—lush growth isn’t always stronger growth.
Containment & trimming
For bamboos, choose the right pot size or use barriers where needed. Many grasses benefit from seasonal tidy-ups—timing depends on the variety.
