Choosing a Plant for the Space You Have

Choosing a plant for a space starts with understanding the space itself. Before selecting a genus, notice how light changes through the day and seasons, how much room is available, and whether the plant will live indoors, on a balcony or in a garden.

Read the light at the actual planting position. Nearby walls, trees, glazing and seasonal changes can alter conditions. Describe what you see and compare it with the information on the current product listing. If you are unsure whether a plant suits your setting, ask before ordering.

Plan for the mature shape. Consider likely height and spread, root space, overhead clearance, pathways and access for routine maintenance. In a garden, think about how each plant will sit alongside existing trees, structures and open areas. For a collection, consider the form and scale of the plants together.

Consider the setting and purpose. Indoor rooms, balconies and exposed gardens each bring different conditions. Note local weather, airflow, available space and the role you want a plant to play, such as a focal point, a grouping or a layer in a larger planting scheme.

Build a considered composition. A small number of clear shapes and textures can make a space feel intentional. Leave enough room to move around and maintain the planting, and take photographs from more than one viewpoint before deciding.
